Atlas Obscura

Atlas Obscura catalogues the world's overlooked wonders — sunken churches, absurd museums, parks built to be misunderstood — in a largely reader-contributed atlas grown since 2009 into tens of thousands of places. Trips to many of them are what fund the archive.

The gazetteer wears a newsroom’s plain clothes now: white ground, a lean nav of Places, Foods and Stories, and one “definitive guide to the world’s hidden wonders” claim doing the branding. The engine still shows through the calm — a Place of the Day shot through a fisheye, a search box promising the whole atlas, wonder rationed out daily like a broadsheet feature. What hooked us is the machine under the media site: every oddity structured, mapped and cross-linked so a two-minute visit quietly becomes an evening.

Swatches lifted straight from the capture — follow one to its shade.
